For social justice day at Watkinson, I lead a workshop with the goal of educating students on the gun debate and getting a conversation going, as well as presenting the gun debate as an issue with no simple and easy solution. I put emphasis on the goal of the workshop being to educate ourselves and learn something from the other side of the debate and did everything I could to make it into a safe space and to encourage people with different ideas to talk. I had everyone take a survey both before and after the workshop to determine how it had affected their views, and the main difference in their responses was that many more people saw it as a complex issue with no simple solution after the workshop than before.
